Grandma Mary Ellen’s Chili Gravy

This is one of the first meals I learned to cook, and there is a reason why I had mom teach me this first, I LOVE IT.  This is definitely my comfort food.  I don’t know where mom learned this but she made this once a week for as long as I can remember.  I remember there were always the fixings for this in our cupboard and always in our shopping cart.

Of all the meals I learned to make this is the one that everybody says “yuk, chili over mashed  potatoes” and after they try it they are hooked!  I  know several people who if could have one meal from me this would be it.

This IS NOT CHILI like you think of when you hear chili, it IS a gravy to top mashed potatoes with.  If you think of it as a bowl of chili to have with cheese and onions you will be disappointed.

  1. Cook hamburger and onion until onion is tender and drain grease
  2. Add beans in center of pan and mash most of the beans with a potato masher (this makes the gravy thicker).
  3. Add the rest of the ingredients and cook over med-low heat 5 - 10 minutes stirring very often (it will burn easily).
  4. Spoon over mashed potatoes, this is one time I take the time to make real homemade mashed potatoes it's worth it.
